Query DVD Profiler Database System (QDVDPDB)

Introduction
The Query DVD Profiler Database system (QDVDPDB) allows users
of the software DVD
Profiler from InterVocative Software
to take a data export from DVD Profiler using and import it into the popular
Microsoft Windows desktop database program - Microsoft Access. Once your DVD movie information is in QDVDPDB you can use all the facilities in Access to view, analyse, query and report on your DVDs. You can read
about QDVDPDB below, to see screenshots of the program click
the links in the text.
QDVDPDB takes the single XML export file and creates an Access
database with data saved into multiple tables:
- Actors
- Boxed Sets
- Credits
- Discs
- DVD
- Events
- Features
- Format
- Genres
- Purchase Information
- Regions
- Review
- Suggest Retail Price Information
- Studios
- Tags
All tables have a data relationship based on the unique "key"
field (called "ID") value in DVD Profiler for DVDs. The table relationships
are defined in the "Relationships"
tool in Access to automatically link tables on the correct field when creating
queries, reports and forms.
Once the data from DVD Profiler is in Access, the
user can do a number of things:
- Browse data in tables and forms
(the screenshot in the preceding link shows one simple form - supplied with
QDVDPDB - the user can make as many of their own forms as they wish however).
- Run queries:
- Supplied with QDVDPDB, which can
highlight interesting problems
with data downloaded from the DVD Profiler database so you can fix them
- Or queries you build yourself for
whatever you are interested in.
- Create and run reports.
- Adjust and correct actors names and roles, and crew names and credits and
then upload the information back to DVD Profiler, updating
your DVD Profiler database. If you wish you can then contribute the amended
and corrected information for the DVD to the online DVD Profiler database
for the DVD Profiler community.
Getting and installing QDVDPDB
- You will need a working copy of Microsoft Access 2003 (or higher) or Microsoft Access 2003 Runtime on your
computer. Unfortunately Access 2000 or 2002 (XP) are not supported as they do not support
XML.
- Make a working folder on your computer for QDVDPDB under Windows program file path, for English language versions of Windows this will be "C:\Program
Files" - name the new folder "QDVDPDB".
So the full folder path will be "C:\Program Files\QDVDPDB" - for other language versions of Windows "C:\Program Files" will be different, QDVDPDB will adjust for the folder name. However all files necessary for QDVDPDB (in the ZIP file) must be in the same folder.
- Download the latest version of QDVDPDB archive ZIP file (QDVDPDB.zip) from
this web site and save into the working folder you just created.
- Expand the archive file into the working folder.
- Read the "ReadMe.txt" file for latest information.
- Double-click the QDVDPDB.mdb file which will automatically launch Access
and start the QDVDPDB application.
- Make sure that the copy of Access allows macro and code execution - see the online help for further information.
- That's it!
You can click on the help button on the startup
menu form to launch the custom help for QDVDPDB for information on how to
use the system. I strongly recommend that you browse the help.
